Our education system is one of the best tools we have for social and economic development and legislation must help us meet today’s education challenges.
In 2017, the fifth Assembly of Nunavut defined the Government’s priorities and guiding principles for the next four years. In Turaaqtavut , our government committed to provide quality schooling, improve student outcomes and strengthen Inuktut. These commitments make amendments to the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act a key priority of the government.
We would like to move forward with education reform. Ilinniarniliriniq Turaaqpalliajavut – Our Goals for Education, is a proposal aiming to actively engage education partners, elected officials and Nunavummiut to reach commonly shared solutions for the development of our education system.
This fall we are travelling across Nunavut, holding public consultations to ensure that all voices and viewpoints are heard. We want to hear from you on how we can build an education system based on Inuit culture, knowledge and practices.
We have accomplished much since the Nunavut
Education Act
was passed in 2008. I am confident that through our discussions we will build an education system that ensures quality bilingual schooling across the territory and success for all students.
